Dr. Nianhua Peng was born in Hanyang, Hubei (湖北汉阳). He was awarded BSc in Semiconductor Physics (武汉大学), MSc in Solid State Physics (武汉大学) and PhD in Solid State Physics (Cambridge), in 1982, 1985 and 1994 respectively. Between 1992 and 1997, he was a research fellow in Solid State Chemistry working at Leeds University and St Andrews University. He joined Surrey Ion Beam Centre from January 1998, and now he is a Liaison Fellow at Surrey University.
His early research interest in 1980s was on the electronic structures and optical properties of layered 3d transition metal intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide crystals. From 1988, he has been involved in perovskite related transition metal oxides: such as isomorphic site selective substitution in high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ, high pressure and high temperature solid state synthesis of CaFeO3-δ, SrNbO3-δ, and fabrication of high temperature superconductor Josephson junctions using masked ion beam irradiation etc.
His current research interest is mainly on the experimental manipulation of physical properties of novel solid state materials under extreme physical conditions such as temperature, pressure and ion beam irradiation/implantation etc. Typical examples include: introduction of point defects in establishing magnetic ordering in conventional semiconducting materials, suppressing superconductivity and studying robust structural materials; manipulation oxygen nonstoichiometry in perovskite oxides on magnetic ordering and lattice distortion; ion beam synthesis of novel materials.
演讲摘要:
For over 30 years, Surrey Ion Beam Centre has played a key role in providing high standard services for researchers both from UK and overseas. In this presentation, I will first introduce the brief history of Surrey Ion Beam Centre, followed by a more detailed description on our state-of-the-art facilities and capabilities in implementing highly accurate ion implantation and ion beam analysis as a public research platform. I will discuss a few selected applications of ion beam technology in areas beyond traditional microelectronics fabrications such as masked ion beam irradiation as a tool for Josephson junction fabrications, the study on the correlation of irradiation created point defects and transport properties in novel superconductors, the possible long range magnetic ordering in ion irradiated materials and a controlled growth of metallic/superconducting nano clusters. Finally I will also describe the operational mechanism at the end of this presentation.
